state and federal government decisions;

POLICIES
The League is nonpartisan. It never
supports or opposes candidates or political parties. To protect this
nonpartisan policy, League officers and board members who represent the
League of Women Voters before the public must refrain from active party
work during their term of office. No current officer of board member
may run for public office.
All other members are encouraged to work as
individuals in the party or campaign of their choice. The League wants
and needs politically active members.
The League does take positions and acts on
issues related to the programs selected at Annual Meeting by its
members. Each League position is based on member consensus, following
study and discussion of the facts.
All members of the League of Women Voters of
Atlanta-Fulton County are also automatically members of the League of
Women Voters of Georgia and the League of Women Voters of the United
States. Full membership is open to any and all U.S. citizens of voting
age. All other individuals may join as associate members.
ORGANIZATION
The structure of the League of Women Voters
parallels the representative system of government under which we live.
Our local, state and national governments are dependent one upon the
other; the base is the individual citizen. The local, state and
national Leagues are also interdependent, and based on the individual
member. Members determine the policies and programs of all League
levels.
The League of Women Voters of Atlanta-Fulton
County is made up of a
board of directors elected at Annual Meeting,
resource committees, task forces, local units and individual members.

Membership
Resource committees offer members many
opportunities to get involved in researching, writing, publishing and
disseminating vital information to members and the public on
governmental issues such as education, foreign policy, human resources
and environmental quality.
The unit is the grass roots body of the
League. Most units meet regularly to focus on all aspects of programs:
program making, gathering information and reaching member
agreement/consensus. The unit can function in more than one capacity.
It can be a discussion unit covering program-related material. It can
take on an added dimension, such as developing and carrying out
fundraising or other special projects, making suggestions for action,
becoming an action team and working with the local boards to promote a
League position of special interest to the group.
PROGRAM
The League arrives at its position through
research, study and a process of member agreement. League action is
based on the general consensus of members who have weighed the facts on
both sides of the issue. This thorough way of forging positions gives
the League its unique influence and credibility with government policy
makers.
Local program is adopted at the April Annual
Meeting. State and national programs are adopted at biennial
conventions, and are based on thoughtful discussions and general
agreement by the local Leagues.
ACTION
The League takes action at all levels of
government. The League’s efforts to shape public policy encompass a
variety of strategies including lobbying for or against legislation and
the use of monitoring techniques and litigation to ensure full
implementation of laws.
